Shutting Down Doesn’t Actually Shut Down Windows 10

January 2020

You would think clicking the Shut Down button on your PC Start Menu would Shut Down your PC. That is not the case with Windows 10. It actually goes into hibernation mode which is what makes it faster to boot up. If you’re experiencing issues with your PC you’ll need to hit the restart button instead. Restarting your PC will fully Shut Down before coming back up again.

The reason your pc doesn’t actually Shut Down when you click Shut Down is due to the Windows 10 “Fast Startup” feature, which is enabled by default.  You can perform a full shut down by pressing and holding the Shift key on your keyboard while you click the “Shut Down” option in Windows. This works whether you’re clicking the option in the Start menu, on the sign-in screen, or on the screen that appears after you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

The State of Ransomware in the US: Report and Statistics 2019

December 2019

cyber security

This report was originally scheduled to be published on January 1st, 2020. We have, however, decided to release it immediately due to a recent incident in which a ransomware attack may have resulted in a municipal government’s data falling into the hands of cybercriminals. We believe this development elevates the ransomware threat to crisis level and that governments must act immediately to improve their security and mitigate risks. If they do not, it is likely that similar incidents will also result in the extremely sensitive information which governments hold being stolen and leaked. We hope that releasing this report early will help kickstart discussions and enable solutions to be found sooner rather than later. Those solutions are desperately needed. The numbers contained in the report will be updated in the New Year and, unfortunately, will almost certainly be greater than the numbers currently stated.

Update – December 14th, 2019: Within 24 hours of this report being published, the city of New Orleans and several other public entities fell victim to ransomware attacks. We repeat the warning made above: the threat level is now extreme and governments must act immediately to improve their preparedness and mitigate their risks.

Scary New MegaCortex Ransomware Strain Discovered That Targets Your Business Network

May 2019

Sophos has discovered a scary new strain of very sophisticated ransomware called MegaCortex. It was purpose-built to target corporate networks, and once penetrated, the attackers infect your entire network by rolling out the ransomware to all servers and workstations, using your own Windows domain controllers.

Sophos have detected infections in the United States, Italy, Canada, France, the Netherlands, and Ireland.

This is a fairly new strain, so not all that much is known yet about how the encryption works, how they are getting in, or if ransom payments are being honored.

How Megacortex Strikes

Sophos made an interesting additional discovery: if the Emotet or Qakbot Trojans have been present on networks that have also been infected with MegaCortex, that suggest that the attackers are paying Trojan operators for access to infected systems just like the RYUK strain.

Your money or your life: Digital extortion scams

March 2019

There’s a particularly insidious type of targeted phishing scam that has grown in popularity since mid-2018. Our Cisco Talos researchers have been monitoring these scams, a few of which we’ll highlight here. As is the case with most phishing scams, they’re after your money, but it’s a departure from attempts to entice you with things like romance or wealth. Instead, the scammers leverage threats against your reputation, your relationships, and sometimes even your life. In essence it’s a transition from carrot to stick.

Let’s say for example that you received an email with the subject line containing both your user name and password. Surprising as this would be, it’s the body of email that really gets your attention. (read more)

Windows 7 Support to End Exactly One Year from Today

January 2019

end of support

On January 14,2020 Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7. Meaning Microsoft will no longer deliver updates or critical security patches to Windows 7. When support ends the risk of not upgrading is that any system still running Windows 7 will then become vulnerable to security risks.  As cyber attacks increase it is becoming more and more crucial that businesses do everything they can to keep their IT Infrastructure up to date. In preparation for the Windows 7 End of Support you should be putting together a migration plan to move off of Windows 7 on to Windows 10 before January 14, 2020.

Do you have what the courts view as "Reasonable Cyber Security" ?

October 2018

Cyber Security laws are constantly evolving to make Cyber Security an obligation that goes in hand with customer data and privacy protection requirements. With all the new types of breaches and security threats changing daily there is more confusion about liability. According to the 2018 Thales Data Threat Report security breaches are up:

“More than a third (36%) of global firms were breached last year, up considerably from 26% in 2017 and 20% in 2016. The U.S. was even more dire, with 46% of U.S. firms polled reporting being breached last year having nearly doubled – from 24% last year. “

Comcast looking to expand service to Fall River Industrial Park Businesses.

November 2013

As a Comcast Business Solution Provider, MTSi is pleased to announce successful progress being made to bring Comcast Services to all of the Fall River Industrial Park businesses. After many years of discussion and debate, MTSi has brought Comcast back to the table along with the City of Fall River, FR Chamber of commerce, Greater FR Development Corp and the FR Industrial Park Association.

All entities will be working together to establish a plan to bring Voice, Video and Data services from Comcast to businesses in the Park. Those who have attended the latest round of discussions have voiced great optimism regarding the project, commenting on how they feel this will finally happen.

The entities involved are requesting the co-operation of ALL businesses in the park in helping MTSi in co-operation with Karl Hetzler from FRIPA. MTSi has been tasked with gathering the Voice, Video and Data needs of each business and providing Comcast with a sales forecast. This sales forecast will aid Comcast in establishing how much funding may or may not be needed from the various organizations mentioned above to make this project a success.

The more active participation from each business in the park, the more likely this project will come to fruition. The time to act is now. Please contact Jesse Cabral from MTSi to start your business on the road to the 21st century.
